Hmmmm, so an interesting outing for the first sprint of the year at Mallory Park yesterday.
Started off dry, but with a wet track, so OK for first practise.
Then it started raining...
Then sleet...
Then heavy snow!
By lunchtime it looked like this:
Image

It was cold, wet and no-fun-at-all, so as soon as they opened the gate for the lunch break I bu66ered off home. :(

Did get a closer look at the Muggo "aero" bumper though:
Image

I think that might be worth a go! :D
(The square bit in the middle is, I think, a FIA LED rain light. Sure Cerbs could have great fun controlling all the LEDs separately...)

How do people find the MX5 on an hillclimb seeing as it's pretty low powered?

They compete against other mx5s so its really down to your driving skill. If you're a good enough driver that can carry a lot of corner speed, the power deficit to other cars is less of an issue i would think.

That or buy a huge fuck off supercharger like me

I have to admit I prefer the idea of circuit racing ... but the reality is this is so much more accessible I think I'll give it a go. Possibly try an event or 2 next year, and if I like it I can always swap my engine for a Mk1 1.8 so I'd be eligible for the MX5 series?

That would be really good, I'm intending on taking the car to one of the hillclimbs anyway to run it past the scrutineers and check where I'm up to and what else I'd need to do ... but some actual practise on a hillclimb would be a good idea at some point!!

Have you an idea of which venues you fancy doing Russell?
There are several places that do one day hillclimb schools if you are interested.
I know Prescott, Harewood (done them myself), Gurston, and even Curborough all hold training events.

I know they do events, I've been to a couple (acting as mechanic for a friend) but I'd rather do one run by the organisers of this series, on one of the tracks I might be using.

All the venues I listed are on the HSA championship calendar.
What are you looking for in a HSA specific taster event?

I know they are, I'm not entirely clueless... The idea is to be with people that might be in the series, and to be able to talk about the series, the regulations etc. Either way, I'll wait to see what Ken comes back with.

Just as an example, the HSA did two pre-season test days at Curborough this year.
Original HSA Forum message from Steve F (HSA Vice Chair):
"Early season testing dates.
We have two 2013 dates now booked in at Curborough:
Friday 15th March
Tuesday 19th March
These are open to all HSA members old and new alike; and also available to those with road-going cars and single seaters."

I'd like to hillclimb because I'd rather race on closed country roads than cuircuits, and hillclimb is the only event I can think of that does that.

The problem is I watch vids like this where people crash and think. Those people are more skilled than me and they still crash, so this means I am going to crash it's only a matter of time.

That is a bit like saying you have watched a video of road car crashes and so it is only a mater of time before you crash your car and what makes you think the driver have talent?

The Berg cup is a bit like Pikes Peak in that it is fast and long with ample room to have crashes especially if you have silly powered cars with slicks. I would hazard many of those driver were not familiar with the course, and that also a lot of the issues happened near the start on cold tyres.

Motorsport is dangerous children. No matter how skilled the driver or how well set up the car is. Conditions, fitness, mentality change to make it the exciting sport that I love to watch. Pushing on the edge means the tiniest mistake can end in rears - just like this video demonstrates. Those drivers aren't there to make up numbers or cruise up the hill posing!

I think it just means they have amazing money.

Drivers crash, but you can crash anywhere, people even manage to crash at Blyton, however also remember that the crashes are the "exciting" bits and these will always get coverage as do the "moments" What is not shown is the other 500 or more cars that went past totally safely and without drama.

These are high powered cars on a long 3K course where significant speeds can be built up and it is also a well know event that has been running for 90 years that attracts people from all over the world. People are going to push the very limits because it is one of those events where you can make a reputation.

Basically its up to you how fast you drive . . . I'd say hillclimbs and sprints are one of the safest forms of motorsport from that perspective. You choose your speed and don't have to worry about other idiots crashing into you.

Have to admit its whats tempting me as well, I don't mind thrashing my car and pushing it as far as I can, but I've put way too much time and effort into it to risk losing it to some numpty that decides he doesn't want to be overtaken...
