Cerbie's Quadcopter Build

Postby Cerberus » Sat Nov 29, 2014 11:24 pm

I'd been aware of quadcopters and hexacopters and I thought they looked quite cool. I'd considered building one but never quite got my act together.

Then someone sent me a link to this video.....

Decision made.... Time to build a quadcopter.

But somehow while I was drawing the plans. I made a hexacopter......

Image

The easy part... Designing the frame.

Click print.....

One kit of parts :thumb:

Image

Assembled into 'prototype one'

Image

The arms are glued together into one unit. Then each arm bolts to a centre hub (or zip ties for testing)

Image

Bare frame weight so far is 300g. I'm probably going to shorten the arms some so that will come down.

Next part will be the tricky bit.... Paying for all the motors and speed controllers and some new 9 channel radio gear

Maybe I will be taking aerial shots of a P5 meet or two next summer

I was thinking ok, cerbs is off on another tech project or something, but wow ... they are fast! So presumably you'll need someone to race against ...

They had a segment on fpv quad copters on the gadget show this week. Looks awesome. You'll need oculus rift glasses as well

It's definitely another one of those things I do to keep my brain occupied over the winter! lol I'm already having lots of fun doing the research.

Once the hexacopter is working properly I will be building a lightweight quadcopter. Then the racing shall commence ;)

I really want a set of FatShark FPV goggles.

But they are out of budget :( I will probably end up with the el cheapo quantum jobbie

Should do the trick.

That stuff is really awesome. They have made great strides with the math behind those ones. They only work inside that net though as the location scanners are mounted up in the corners of the room.

When you are outside doing mad multicopter stuff you have to rely on GPS fo your location. So you don't get the millimetre perfect stuff that those can do. But you can still do autonomous waypoint flying and stuff like return-to-land if there are any problems.

Demo of DJI Naza 'Ground Station'. Autonomous waypoint flying-

Sadly the DJI system is very expensive. Also it has some firmware bugs. Searching YouTube for "DJI Flip of Death" yields some scary videos.

I will be using a HKPilot2.7 Flight Controller.

Which can do a lot of the same tricks. But being from an open source project the interface is somewhat less.... intuitive...

Another interesting read from the BBC: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-30387107

If you build a drone at home you could in theory set it to reach 2,000m high.

There's your challenge Cerbs.
