Scrappage Advice Please

Postby Fred Gassit » Sun May 26, 2019 1:49 pm

Made the mistake of pulling the cylinder head to remove a broken bolt about 3 years back, and since then the car has stood unloved & neglected, letting the mould and tin worm spread unchecked...
Hence it might be time for the great scrapyard in the sky...
(The upside is that the space on the drive might get filled by a tidy Mk3 if I can find one for the right price.)

Can anyone who has had dealings with a car scrapper give me some tips?
Do I need to keep the wheels and suspension on the car for them to collect it, or can I harvest all the useful bits and get someone with a crane to winch the shell onto the back of a truck?
Dunno how these things work?
Any recommendations for local scrappies? (I am in Stratford.)
Thanks!

Took mine to Whites of Coventry, received £95 scrap value. They may collect but expect a charge.

Thanks for that, Ken.
Did you weigh in a whole car or just a shell?
Worst case I might just buy a job lot of Sawzall blades and hack the chassis up into bite sized chunks.

Whole car went less useful bits, radio, door card etc.
Then trailers it over, know they collect though.

There's probably more value in selling it as a project? Get some pics up and someone might be interested ... I'd take it on if I had space in the drive!

Waved it a tearful goodbye this morning, to be rewarded by a cheque for £62.40.
As I had stripped most of the car the scrappie basically just paid metal value, which I was happy with.
It went to International Metal Recyclers at Long Marston, and their collection service was very efficient. Recommended.
(Plus they were good enough to return my wheels.)

Such a shame, was it the same car you did the Curborough sprint with. Price sounds about right for scrappage including collection. Will you be getting another?

Looking at the prices nice Mk1s command these days it was indeed a shame!
But the car was a bit dodgy from day one. It turned out to have had shoddily repaired damage all down the left side, and after a few years of neglect the paint was peeling and all the filler was falling off. Plus the sills were rusting out. Too far gone to be worth saving.

Have to admit I am scouring Autotrader for a nice Mk3.5, although it won't get the same level of track modification.
(Well, I say that now... 8) )
